Japanese & Opera Gala Concert 2018 in Gold Coast

Event Details

We will perform some Japanese traditional songs with beautiful Japanese dancing and famous arias from Opera in duet or solo, accompanied by piano and flute.

Artist Profiles

Yuumi Karakawa : Soprano

Yuumi is a very talented young lady who is excellent in all areas of music. Yuumi was born in Okinawa Japan. She graduated from Aichi Prefectural Conservatorium, Japan in 2012. She has a Bachelor of Music, major in singing. Lives in Tokyo, Japan. Yuumi was awarded the second prize in the Opera singing competition in Okinawa in Oct. 2014.
Recently she has sung at corporate company events and parties and also sings for dinner shows of 5 star hotels in Tokyo, Her angelic but powerful voice sounds magical, attracts people and melts their heart.

Emi Yoshida : Mezzo Soprano

Lover of music, singer and piano accompanist to Suzuki carol concerts.
Emi has been taking opera singing lessons privately from international opera singers for the last 8 years.
Originally started to take singing lessons to help her recover from breast cancer and to heal herself. Now uses her singing talent to heal other people.
Sang at Japanese festivals, multicultural events, Italian Day Care Centre, many aged care centres, and carol concerts.
Organised and jointly sang with Yuumi in duet several times in the past. For example, the Japanese and Opera Charity Gala Concert in 2015 at Somerset College which was very successful and the money raised was donated to the Education Society in Fukushima.
Her warm and powerful voice has healing qualities.

Makiko Fukushima : Flutist

A multi-instrumental music performer, a composer and arranger.
Makiko got her first music education at Yamaha Music School in Japan from the age of five. As a young pianist and composer, she was dreaming of being a professional musician one day, but gave up the dream in high school. After immigrating to Australia in 1995, she found peace with her loving family. At spring 2011, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and went through treatment. She realised that life is too short not to do what we really want to do. So she challenged Music Examination, and successfully obtained Licentiate Diploma in Pianoforte Performance. Since then, she has been active as a musician giving concerts in Australia, Japan and Europe.
Makiko plays piano as well as flute in various occasions.
She is also the founder of International Natural Therapy Association, Director of E-Conception and a specialist of Aromatherapy and Claytherapy.

Kaito Yoshida: Violinist

Started to play Violin at age 5, since then learning Suzuki method in Japan and Gold Coast until year 12 at Somerset College.
Passed A.Mus and A Violin in 2013, and performed as Fiddler in “ Fiddler on the roof” musical in 2012. Performed in Japanese and Opera charity Gala Concert in 2015 etc. Currently studying at the Queensland University major Commerce and Business management.

Kayako Suzuki : Pianist

She started piano when she was 5 years old.
After Music high school, she graduated from Tokyo College of Music, major piano.
After graduation, she started her career as a corépétiteur of opera, mainly Italian opera, mainly as a music staff for a number of operatic companies for opera orchestra parts at the concert.
She is trusted by many conductors and opera singers with coaching to singers, interpreting the music for singers and accurate score reading.
In collaboration with a small orchestra, she is involved in many opera performances using a full score. Her repertoire includes not only over 100 from Opera but also many from religious choral songs such as oratorios.
In the field of chorus, she instructs and also plays as a pianist at Tokyo Pharmaceutical University Choir, Tokyo Arcadia Choir, and also at opera enthusiast’ organisations and vocal clubs.
Currently she is an active member of the Machida City Opera Association, Itabashi Ward Musi-cians Association, Japan German Riet Association, Yamato International Opera Association, Lumminiao Opera.
In addition she has a reputation as a subtile operator of Opera and in April 2018, she was in charge of subtitles of Magic Flute for Komische Oper Berlin performance in Japan.

Keiko Musaka : Pianist

She started to take piano lessons from the age of three.
She graduated with a Degree in Music, Major Piano from Senzokugakuen University in 2002.
After graduation, she started teaching piano and continued for 12 years at PSTA Yamaha Music School and Shimamura Music School.
At the same time she continued to take piano lessons from emeritus Professor, Mrs. Akemi Mura-kami.
She has a performance and a teaching grade at Yamaha music.
She has performed in several piano and chamber music concerts in Japan.

Katsumi Maddison : Japanese dancer / representative of Japanese Dancing Mai

Learned a wide range of dances such as Jazz, Modern ballet, Contemporary, Flamenco and traditional Japanese dance. Now she is active as a performer of traditional Japanese dance and Yosakoi dance to make friendly relations between Australian and Japanese culture in the Gold Coast, Australia.

Gold Coast Japanese Dancing Mai

“Japanese Dancing Mai” is a group performing a traditionalJapanese dance, Nihon Buyo. It was established in June 2010. The purpose of the group is to introduce Japanese culture and also to become a bridge between Australia and Japan through cultural exchange. They perform not only traditional Japanese dances, but also other types of Japanese dances ranging from classic dance, folk dance and modern dance; Yosakai and Yosakoi Soran to let people have fun enjoying Japanese dancing.
Over thelastcouple of years, they have participated in a range of activities including visits to agedcarefacilities, workshops at schools, and performed at multicultural events. They also had acampaignto raise relief funds for the East Japan earthquake.

Chris White : MC/Singer

Chris graduated from Bond University, Major in Law in 2016. Being half Japanese and Australian, he can speak English, Japanese and Chinese fluently. He has hosted many events on the Gold Coast including Japan and Friends Day, Charity Concerts etc. He is enthusiastic about multicultural development and is a valued asset to the community. Now he works as a lawyer at a law firm in Redcliffe. After he did MC for the Japanese and Opera charity gala concert in 2015, he started to learn opera singing, and now he is enthusiastic about opera singing himself. He sang the Australian National Anthem at WBF World Heavyweight Boxing championships at Darwin in 2016.
